histrionic personality disorder (HPD) is defined by the american psychiatric association as a personality disorder characterised by a pattern of excessive emotionality and attention-seeking, including an excessive need for approval and inappropriately seductive behaviour, usually beginning in early adulthood. these individuals are lively, dramatic, vivacious, enthusiastic, and flirtatious. histrionic personality disorder (HPD) is one of the most common found in the united states and effects 40% of inpatients, effecting more women than men by about 4:1 ratio. this disorder can easily be mistaken for immaturity, however a person with HPD does not simply grow out of this selfish state of being. you may perceive people with HPD to be very dependent, rude and demanding, shallow, and far from genuine.
